Press pLAy: The Bridge

Looking for a thought-provoking, somewhat life changing documentary to watch?

I can highly recommend The Bridge. This documentary is all about suicide, which is a pretty grimm topic and I can warn you ahead that the footage is mostly gut renching to watch, but if anything this film will leave you thinking.

Basically the documentary chronicles one year's camera footage of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, U.S.A. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction (sounds lovely right) but sadly that is not where the attraction of this bridge ends, it is also one of the most regularly chosen suicide spots.

The Golden Gate Bridge is 75 m above the water and a fall or jump from that height is almost always fatal. Experts say that the body falls so fast that by the time it reaches the water, it is an impact as hard as hitting concrete. The internal organs are pulled from their set places and bones are crushed into fragments. If by some sort of ironic twist, the fall doesn't kill the jumper, the sharks that are known to circle the area will finish the job. Other causes of death are the cold temperature levels of the water and drowning.

The Bridge documentary shows footage of people jumping off the bridge right in the middle of day with lots of people walking and driving by. These are people who felt they had no other option but to jump.

Its sad, shocking and disturbing to watch. But for me, a good documentary is one that shows the truth, no matter how hard it is to watch. The Bridge holds nothing back. It is what it is, and such is the topic of suicide. There is nothing pretty about it.
