pLAylist 2011: The Kooks - Junk of the Heart

The Kooks new album Junk of the Heart hit the shelves just the other day and as we've come to expect from this British band, their new album is an indie-pop-rock mix. It's that chilled music that is great for a lazy sunday.

Best Tracks Include:
* Carried Away (Bonus Track)
* Rosie
* Eskimo Kiss

The lead singer Luke Pritchard's voice is really what I love most about The Kooks. It doesn't matter what he is singing about, just the quality and unique sound of his voice is enough for me to always have this band on my pLAylist :) so press pLAy... :)

pLAy List 2011: Example - Playing in the Shadows

If you haven't heard of Example yet, he has just released a new album that is flipping amazing and in my little opinion his best yet. It's called Playing in the Shadows. Its been doing re-runs on my ipod all week and should be added to your 2011 pLAylist asap.

Best Tracks Include:
*Midnight Run
*Changed the way you kiss me
*Lying to Yourself

Pretty much the entire album rocks. Its a pop-electronic-rap mix but I think everyone will like it :)

Press pLAy and get out the dark ages with this new age magical mashup :)

Staropramen Lemon - When Czech Beer Gets Old..

As if it were possible to get sick of Czech Beer! But for those days when you've already carbo-loaded to the max and you know a beer is going to make you explode, there's Staropramen Lemon. I'm loving this drink at the moment. It tastes like beer but with a fruity lemon flavour. Its not high in alcohol but its refreshing and a perfect alternative to beer. Try it out! The Czech Republic hasn't quite keyed into the ciders market that is aimed at the female drinker, but this drink is close enough and an excellent addition to the liquor isle.

pLAy List 2011: Foster the People - Torches

I'm loving the new album Torches by Foster the People. It's electronic indie pop, a heap of creative tracks including Pumped Up Kicks and Don't Stop (Colour on the walls). Keep an open mind when listening to their sound, it's a little out of the box but in the best way possible.

pLAy with no deLAy :)

pLAy List 2011: Theophilus London - Timez are Weird These Days

Ever heard of Theophilus London? If not, then let me tell you this guy can sing. He's Hip Hop mixed with an Alternative sound and its a brilliant combination. Listen up for his single I Stand Alone and on his album Timez are Weird These Days the track Love is Real is just as good. This guy is going places and best you get with the times and keep those eyes and hears pointed in London's direction.

pLAy it :)

New to the pLAy List: David Guetta - Nothing But The Beat

David Guetta's new album Nothing But The Beat recently hit the stores and its well worth the buy. The beats are sick and really a good play for getting in the zone for that awesome night out. It's cleverly crafted and shows the master skills Guetta brings to DJ world.

pLAy it now :)

Tegan and Sara - Hello Lyrics

Tegan and Sara - Hello (Lyrics)

Right now I feel so empty,
And someday won’t be ending,
Until I’ve done all that I can,
All that.
Until I’ve done all that I can.
One day, it’ll get easier,
'Cause right now,
I feel so simple,
Until I’ve done all that I can,
All that.
Until I’ve done all that I can.
And so I said, "Hello hello hello, I’m right here."
Oh, hello hello hello,
I’m right here.
I’m right here waiting for...

Drinking to yesterdays news.
I’m sorry I was late, I was so blue.
Oh, my hands hurt from holding your hands.
And I’m young but it’s hard to believe, yeah-e-ah,
That someday I will never see you again.
And you might not believe this,
But you’ve changed me so much.
But baby (baby) it’s so hard leaving you.
And maybe (maybe) this was the only, the only way.
Yeah, yeah.
But right now I wish I was older,
And right now,
You look so simple.
Now is not my time.
No, no,
Now is not the time,
And so I said, "Hello hello hello, I’m right here."
I said, "Hello hello hello, I’m right here."
I'm right here waiting for...

Drinking to yesterday’s news.
I’m sorry I was late, I was so blue.
Oh, my hand hurts from holding your hand.
And I’m young but it’s hard to believe,
Yeah-e-ah,
That someday I will never see you again.
And you might not believe this ,
but you’ve changed me so much.
But baby (baby), it’s so hard leaving you.
And maybe (maybe) this was the only, the only way.
Yeah, yeah.
But baby (baby), it’s so hard leaving you.
And maybe (maybe) this was the only, the only way.
Yeah, yeah.
But baby (baby), it’s so hard leaving you.
And maybe (maybe) this was the only, the only way.
Yeah, yeah.
'Cause someday I will never see you again.

Art Buzz: Lab Art 2011: Italian Love Affair

Recently did some travelling through Italy and was inspired by the sociable people and their openly engaging male - female dynamic :) Hope you get the essence of Italian life from this picture :) Peace

Portuguese Rummy

To put it simply, travelling involves alot of waiting in airports or train stations, and you end up having to be really creative with how you make the time pass. So for me, after exhaustively listening to my ipod and using up my two hour laptop battery, I'm happy to pull out packs of cards and play some portuguese rummy. It's like normal rummy but like a gazillion times better. This is how it goes:

You need 2 packs of cards, including all jokers and a piece of paper for scoring.
Each player gets 14 cards.
Put the remaining playing cards in a pile and turn the first card over.
If the person starting doesn't want to pick up that card, they give that card plus one from the pile to the next player. (You can have more then two players)
Its works the same as normal rummy - pick up a card, throw out one at the end of your turn.
Portuguese rummy is divided into rounds:
1st Round - each player must put down 2 trips (4,4,4 or 6,6,6 etc) before adding to others cards or putting down more cards
2nd Round - 1 trip and 1 run of 4 (1,2,3,4 etc)
3rd Round - 4 of a kind (3,3,3,3) and 1 run of 4
4th Round - 3 trips
5th Round - 2 trips and 1 run of 4
6th Round - 1 trip and 1 run of 7 (K,Q,J,10,9,8,7 etc)
Only on the last round, the player needs to come out clean, which means put all their cards on the table without having one left to throw away.
Points - Any Jokers - counts 50 each
            Ace - counts 25 each
            King, Queen, Jack - counts 10 each
            Every other card - counts 5 each
Take the points tally at the end of each round.
Note that - 2's count as jokers as well as normal jokers
               - You can only replace a joker/2 if you have a clubs card (example replace a 10 of clubs for the
                 joker in the following K,Q,J,joker,9 )
Person with the least amount of points at the end of round 6 wins!

Hopefully I havent left out any essential details. Happy playing :)

The End of One European Chapter, the Beginning of Another

At this moment in time I have been living in Vienna for over 10 months, and like with any experience, this one is coming to an end. I've done my time, I've enjoyed my time and I have collected so many memories, it's going to be extremely hard to leave this beautiful city and all the amazing people I have shared this experience with. Funnily enough I had never intentionally wanted to live in Vienna, but winded up coming here as the closest and most prospective alternative to Prague. Now that I have spent so long here, Vienna has grown on me and I can scratch it onto my list of favourite European cities, right below Prague. Its certainly been real :)

Press pLAy : Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie's latest album Codes and Keys is definitely full of tracks that you have to sieve through your mind to understand, but overall its like their other albums, which is: Something you wanna be listening to!

Here's a story I made up with their song titiles, just for kicks:

You are a Tourist with Unobstructed Views sitting Underneath the Sycamore on Monday Morning watching Portable Television next to St Peters Cathedral with its Doors Unlocked and Open because Home is a Fire and thoughts of Some Boys with their Codes and keys screaming Stay Young, Go Dancing! makes you just want to listen to Death Cab for Cutie and forget all the bullsh*t.

Haha, with that said Press pLAy :) Good album, good sound!

Press pLAy : Brooke Fraser

This New Zealander's 2010 album Flags is the answer to any doubts you have about a country where sheep and rugby rule. It's soft brilliance and easy to listen to. Brooke Fraser knows how to blend feeling and sound to just the right amount. It's got a serious hippie vibe, but i like. Peace and love.

Awesome tracks include:
* Something in the Water
* Coachella
* Here's to You

Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy : The Naked and Famous

Looking for some indie chilled music, then Passive Me, Aggressive You from The Naked and Famous is a good choice.

Best Tracks on the album include:
* Young Blood
* No Way
* Jilted Lovers

Overall its one of those albums that is best to listen to when chilling with some friends or on a crazy roadtrip. This music just blends into whatever scene you want it to.
Give indie a chance,
Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy : David Guetta

What can't this guy do? David Guetta's latest offering is Where dem' Girls At? featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida. This song is super awesome and you'd be missing out if you havent heard it yet. Nicki Minaj adds some of her unique flavour to the song with some rap verses. The song is fast and a sure club hit.

Check it out and Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy : Alexandra Stan

Alexandra Stan hits us with Mr. Saxobeat, an upbeat dance track that started out it's success in Romania of all places. This song is currently playing on all major European radio stations and its super catchy. Makes you wanna get out there and dance! The music video is also worth watching.

Press pLAy : Raney Shockne

Raney Shockne's song Broken Arrow (ft. Jessie Mann)
Beastly (2011) Soundtrack

What do you do when you're stuck,
Because the one that you love,
Has pushed you away,
And you can't deal with the pain,
And now you're trying to fix me,
Mend what he did,
I'll find the piece that i'm missing,
But I still miss him,
I miss him, i'm missing him,
Oh I miss him, I miss him i'm missng him

And you're sitting in the front row,
Wana be first in line,
Waiting by my window,
Giving me all your time,
You could be my hero,
If only I could let go,
But his love has still hit me,
Like a broken arrow.
Like a broken arrow.

He's the thorn in my flesh
That I can't take out
He's stealing my breath
When you're around,
And now you're trying to convince me,
He wasn't worth it,
But you can't complete me,
It's the thought that he's missing,

I miss him, I'm missing him,
Oh I miss him I miss him, i'm missing him,

And you're standing in the front row,
Wana be first in line,
Waiting by my window,
Giving me all your time,
You could be my hero,
If only I could let go,
But his love has still hit me,
Live a broken arrow,
Like a broken arrow.

What do you do
When your hearts in two places?
You feel great but you're torn inside.
You feel love but you just can't embrace it,
When you found the right one at the wrong time.

And you're
Standing in the front row,
Wanna be first in line,
Waiting by my window,
Giving me all your time,
You could be my hero,
If only I could let go,
But his love still hit me,
Like a broken arrow.
Like a broken arrow...

* Under Cover of Darkness
* Machu Picchu (personal favourite)
* Games
* Two Kinds of Happiness

Waste no more time, The Strokes have hit the hammer on the head with Angles.

Press pLAy: Movie Picks

 No Strings Attached, starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher is a brilliant movie to watch if you're in the mood for a light, funny, romantic mix. Great actors and a great story, including the 'all time romantic gesture' of a guy making a girl a period music mix! haha, no jokes.
 The Way Back is a serious movie with an all star cast and a memorable, gritty story line. It's partly based on the true story of 3 men who escaped from Siberia during WWII and crossed the Himalaya's into India. I was really fascinated watching all the tough stuff this group of escapee's went through and totally amazed at the outcome! This movie is definitely worth a watch. It's pretty long though, but bear with it.

The Roommate, starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly is a thriller that will keep you on edge and probably have you shouting at the screen saying 'Don't open the shower curtain, stupid girl!' It's pretty gripping and I'd recommend a watch, even if it is just to see a bunch of TV actors and actresses transcend to the movie scene. Check it out :)

Culture Class: Springtime in Europe

This is my first time experiencing Spring in Europe, and after a long, cold and dark Winter, the beauty of Spring is certainly a breath of fresh air. Sounds cheesy right, but seriously thats how you feel when you walk outside, its refreshing!

The flowers are in bloom, the trees have fresh green buds and when it is not raining, the sunshine is fantastic!

Now that I've had a taste of what Summer will be like, I can't wait to shed the clothes layers and be able to enjoy being outside again.

Snow is great, but sunshine, flowers and clear skies are way better in my opinion.

I love Spring in Europe :)

Press pLAy : Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters just released their new album Wasting Light today and if you are into rock music and liked their previous albums, then this one will be an awesome listening experience.

I remember their album Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace from 2007 was pretty epic.

Wasting Light is a combination of hard rocking and slower tracks, enough for every mood and my favourites include:

* I Should Have Known
* These Days
* Bridge Burning
* Rope

Check it out asap, and Press pLAy :)

Art Buzz: Lab Art 2011: Hip Hop

Press pLAy : Lena Meyer Landrut

For those who don't know, Lena Meyer Landrut is a singer from Germany who rose to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest. She is best known for her song Satellite. I literally can't get this song out of my head. It is super catchy and you'll love it.

Satellite is featured on her 2010 album My Cassette Player. The album is full of upbeat songs of the pop genre. There are also a couple of slower, more dreamy songs.

Other cool tracks include:
*  You can't stop me
*  I just want your kiss
*  Not Following

Press pLAy, Satellite will be ringing in your head all day (but in a good way) :)

Press pLAy : Panic at the Disco

Panic at the Disco recently released their latest album Vices and Virtues, and like the album cover suggests you can expect something completely weird and different from this band. That's what I love most about them, they are quirky and not afraid to portray that in their rock music.

Awesome tracks on the album include:
* Hurricane
* Trade Mistakes
* The Ballod of Mona Lisa

Only thing I was kind of disappointed about with this album, was that they weren't as experimental with their song titles. In the past they played with words and come up with brilliant titles, definitely far from the average run-of-the-mill titles. Oh well, its not a train smash!

Check the album out, its pretty rocking, Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy: Old Music That Still Rocks

Even though we are smack bang in the age of hip hop, RnB and dance, I still like to take a trip back and listen to the occasional older album. Definitely puts some perspective on what today's music has edged out from and is a genuine reminder of those good ol days when difference stood out more then commerical.

So here's my take on 'Old music that still rocks' :

* First on the list is The Cranberries. I just recently saw and laughed through their music video for Just My Imagination. It absolutely made my day to see lead singer Dolores O'Riordan floating around the screen listening to her discman with butterflies flying around. Even though their music videos are stuck in the 90's, The Cranberries music is ageless,

* The Beatles come in second. They churned out so many songs, it's almost impossible to ignore the effect their music still has on the listener all these years later. At Madame Tussards in London, there is a phenomenal wax ensemble of The Beatles, I kinda had some thoughts about coming back in the night to take it. Movies like Across the Universe rightly glorify their music and further force those catchy tunes on the nation. Amazing, genius music.

* Third place goes to Louis Armstrong and his breath-taking voice. "I see trees so green, Red roses too, I see them blume, from in you, and I think to myself...What a Wonderful world". Louis Armstrong, you have made me see beauty in the world and it's certainly a better world knowing we can always replay your voice anytime, anywhere.

* The Ramones, my favourite rock band ever. They sing about the weirdest things but I can't stop tapping my feet along with the tune and playing some air drums.

And the list goes on and on, but I have some real work to do, so better stop re-living music history and step back into the age of techno and synthesizers :)

Press pLAy, golden oldies make for happy time :)
