Press pLAy : Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars brought out his latest album Doo-wops & Hooligans in October and if you haven't listened to it yet, you are missing out on a brilliant bunch of tracks. This guy has an amazing voice and a heck of alot of ability to make songs that really mean something.

Best tracks on the album include:
* Marry You
* Count On Me
* The Other Side (ft Cee-Lo Green and B.o.B)
* Just The Way You Are

It's really a brilliant album and worth owning :)

Culture Class: First Snowfall of Winter

For someone from the Southern Hemisphere, where the summers are hot and the winters are mild, experiencing the first snowfall of the European winter is exciting to say the least. Just tonight I happened to walk out of a delicious sushi supper and into the street only to find it pouring with rain. I wasn't exactly happy, until I realised that along with the rain, small tiny snowflakes were coming down all around me! It was magical :) My walk home was pretty much just me with my head pointed to the sky in awe of a whole different kind of winter. At the moment the city is anticipating the christmas season and there are colourful lights strung across the streets and christmas trees around every corner, so add snowflakes to that mix and you have a wonderful magical christmas combination. I'm looking forward to my first white winter in a long long time. Bring on the snow :)

Press pLAy: Plan B

U.K. rapper turned soul artist Plan B aka Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew recently released his second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks. I'd honestly never heard of Plan B until I stumbled across this album, but after listening to it I'm really loving his music.  It's alot more soul then rap, and there's a theatrical sound to most of the songs.

Tracks worth a listen include:
* The Recluse
* Welcome to Hell

Check it out! Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy : My Chemical Romance

Feeling the need for a little emo rock, then try My Chemical Romance and their newest album Danger Days: The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys. You might have to listen to this album two or three times before you'll like it, but just like they say 'the third time is lucky' and you'll be pressing pLAy a few more times after that.

Rocking tracks include:
* Na na na (na na na .... )
* Destroya
* Bulletproof heart
* Sing
* Planetary (Go!)
* The Only Hope For Me is You

This album is not as dark as their previous albums, and the emo sound has a sci fi twist to it. Its definitely a different sound for My Chemical Romance, but you can't hate a band for trying something new.

Give it a listen, decide for yourself, Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy: The Pretty Reckless

Punk rock band The Pretty Reckless, with lead singer Taylor Momsen, presented their first album Light Me Up to the music scene in August. The amount of black eye-liner circulating Taylor Momsen's eyes is enough to indicate that this band has an edgy feel. Jokes aside, the music is pretty good. Most know Taylor Momsen as Jenny from Gossip Girl, but look out for her singing talent on this album.

Good tracks include:
* Make Me Wanna Die
* Light Me Up
* Just Tonight

Press pLAy on this one, its a surprise for sure :)

* Love You Long Time
* Someday
* The Situation

Bascially every track is pretty amazing! Definitely hard to choose my favourites.

Press pLAy : Ke$ha

From Animal to Cannibal, this week Kesha presents her latest album to the world and if you liked the first album, you'll like this one. The music style is similar and the songs range from out-spoken to heartfelt. Its a good mix.

The album cover is pretty interesting and definitely draws one in for a closer look. Kesha is confrontational and she makes it work for her. This album is true to her style.

Awesome tracks on Cannibal include:
* We R Who We R
* Crazy Beautiful Life
* The Harold Song

Take a listen! Press pLAy :)

Press pLAy : Kanye West

Kanye West is not one to hold back (I'm remembering the Taylor Swift MTV awards moment right now), and you can expect nothing less from his latest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

The original cover art for the album has been considered too explicit, so there are now going to be 5 different covers for the album circling stores. The one featured here is not the original, but it is one of the official 5 covers. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is Kanye West's fifth album.

Tracks to listen out for on the album include:
* Dark Fantasy
* Blame Game (ft John Legend)
* Lost in the World
* Gorgeous (ft Kid Cudi & Raekwon)
as well as the popular and already released Power and Runaway.

It's a brilliant album and enough to make me forget Kanye West's previous mishaps.

Check it out November 22nd!

Press pLAy : Cee Lo Green

Rapper and RnB artist Cee Lo Green brings us a hit with his newest album The Lady Killer. The reason for the success of this album in comparison to his previous albums, is the touch of old school he's added to all of his songs. People relate to recognisable sounds and the way he has re-worked old sounds into new is more than catchy. Its almost broadway but with a different twist. Nothing is better then the unexpected right?!

Awesome tracks on the album include:
* Fuck You (also known as Forget You)
* No Ones Gonna Love You
* Satisfied

Press pLAy, this album will put a spark into your day :)

Culture Class: To Cross or Not To Cross

It's not joke when I say that European drivers are dare-devils. I hate to generalise, but the reason I feel I have the right in this case, is due to the fact that the European public are noticably really well trained at waiting for green walking lights when wanting to cross a street. It is very rare to see someone cross when the red light is flashing.

I come from a country where people cross the street where-ever they please and for the most part the hap-hazard system works. I know I definitely don't feel restricted when crossing streets or guilty for having not waited for a light to tell me when to go. As a kid I learnt the 'look left, look right, look left again' mantra and so far that has worked pretty well for me.

I sometimes wonder how many minutes people over here spend waiting for the green light to come on. I'm currently getting my cameleon on, and going with the flow, but now and again I do cross when its red. I always look first of course.

Guess with the crazy european drivers, the lighting system is helping save lives. So there must be some method in the madness. I just can't help but marvel at the zombie trance people go into when wanting to do something as simple as cross the street. Strange!

Press pLAy: The Bridge

Looking for a thought-provoking, somewhat life changing documentary to watch?

I can highly recommend The Bridge. This documentary is all about suicide, which is a pretty grimm topic and I can warn you ahead that the footage is mostly gut renching to watch, but if anything this film will leave you thinking.

Basically the documentary chronicles one year's camera footage of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, U.S.A. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction (sounds lovely right) but sadly that is not where the attraction of this bridge ends, it is also one of the most regularly chosen suicide spots.

The Golden Gate Bridge is 75 m above the water and a fall or jump from that height is almost always fatal. Experts say that the body falls so fast that by the time it reaches the water, it is an impact as hard as hitting concrete. The internal organs are pulled from their set places and bones are crushed into fragments. If by some sort of ironic twist, the fall doesn't kill the jumper, the sharks that are known to circle the area will finish the job. Other causes of death are the cold temperature levels of the water and drowning.

The Bridge documentary shows footage of people jumping off the bridge right in the middle of day with lots of people walking and driving by. These are people who felt they had no other option but to jump.

Its sad, shocking and disturbing to watch. But for me, a good documentary is one that shows the truth, no matter how hard it is to watch. The Bridge holds nothing back. It is what it is, and such is the topic of suicide. There is nothing pretty about it.

Press pLAy : Tinie Tempah

New on the Hip Hop scene is Tinie Tempah. He is a London rapper whose music is phenomenal!
His most recent album Disc-Overy is still flying off the shelves and I'm certainly not suprised because he knows how to make beats work.

Best Tracks on the album include:
* Pass Out
* Written in the Stars
* Miami 2 Ibiza
* Frisky

Also featured on his album are Swedish House Mafia, Kelly Rowland, Eric Turner and more. They help add to his flavour but the star of the show is certainly the man himself.

Big ups to Tinie Tempah, Hip Hop is better because of you!

That's What He Said: Joaquin Phoenix

My opinion of actor turned rapper Joaquin Phoenix has drastically altered after watching the documentary I'm Still Here. Now I am asking myself if he really is still all there? He seems lost in the transition he is trying to make in his life and I really wonder if there is any hope left for him in life and in his career if this documentary is anything to judge him by.

I'm Still Here depicts a detailed and explicit portrayal of one tough year in JP's real life as he ventures away from the public eye and tries to express his real self through the means of rap. It somewhat depicts a mid-life crisis and a bad one at that.

Throughout the documentary people question if Joaquin Phoenix is joking about all this rap thing or if he really is being serious and attempting a new career from scratch. Footage shows how JP struggles to deal with the perceptions of the public and being misunderstood. One line from JP himself is "Love me or Hate me but just don't misunderstand me".

The fact that this documentary was made, shows a hestitation for JP to move away from the film medium. I respect that he wants to be a rapper, I respect that he wants to express his real self, but i don't respect that he was in this documentary. It only raises more suspicion about the seriousness of his move to rap and ending his acting career.

Maybe i am just misunderstanding him.... but i know for sure that i don't like the person he is at the moment. If  he wants to be real, he needs to get real with himself and admit that he has a few issues that he clearly needs to resolve. Drugs, anger, self perception, ego all come to mind.

I want to understand Joaquin Phoenix but this documentary raises so many questions about him that I am now more confused than ever.

Press pLAy: Rihanna

Are you ready for Rihanna's newest album Loud? After getting a taste of her new music with the release of singles Only Girl (In The World) and her collaboration with Eminem on Love The Way You Lie, I know I have high expectations.

This is Rihanna's fifth album and judging by the many changes in style she tries out, this album promises to be packed with a mixture of songs truelly representative of the young singer who has now morphed into a sophisticated lady. Rihanna is all about making a stand in a world full of bad boys and Loud couldn't be a more prefect name for her new album.

Tracks featured on the album include:
* Only Girl (In the world)
* What's My Name
* Complicated
* Love The Way You Lie Part II
* S&M
as well as others.

Loud is due for release November 16th 2010! Get your hands on it!

Musically, Some Kind of Trouble is similar to his previous albums and that is good news because judging by his success on the charts, we all loved his last few albums.

The new album is packed with a variety of songs about the good and bad parts of love. Some songs will have you crying, others will give you hope. James Blunt once again takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

The best tracks on the album include:
* Stay The Night
* No Tears
* Superstar
* These Are The Words

If Indie Rock is your thing, you've got to check out Matt & Kim! Their new album Sidewalks is quirky and really makes me feel like dancing around like a fool and just having fun. That's the essence of their music, its different and its cool. Every track on the album has a great sound and you'll be singing along after the first 10 seconds.

Jamming tracks on Sidewalks:
* Block after Block
* Red Paint
* AM/FM Sound
* Cameras

Not your usual run of the mill music, but, come on, sometimes we have to take a break from the Pop song chart hoggers and the RnB bling bling 'ima a billionaire' songs. yawn!

My favourite tracks on the album include mostly the newest singles:

* F*cking Perfect
* I Don't Believe you

"So Raise Your Glass if you are wrong in all the right ways".. This girl sure knows how to lay it out!

That's What He Said: John Donne

A VALEDICTION FORBIDDING MOURNING.
by John Donne

AS virtuous men pass mildly away,
    And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
    "Now his breath goes," and some say, "No."

So let us melt, and make no noise,                                       5
    No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move ;
'Twere profanation of our joys
    To tell the laity our love.

Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears ;
    Men reckon what it did, and meant ;                              10
But trepidation of the spheres,
    Though greater far, is innocent.

Dull sublunary lovers' love
    —Whose soul is sense—cannot admit
Of absence, 'cause it doth remove                                     15
    The thing which elemented it.

But we by a love so much refined,
    That ourselves know not what it is,
Inter-assurèd of the mind,
    Care less, eyes, lips and hands to miss.                           20

Our two souls therefore, which are one,
    Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion,
    Like gold to aery thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so                                          25
    As stiff twin compasses are two ;
Thy soul, the fix'd foot, makes no show
    To move, but doth, if th' other do.

And though it in the centre sit,
    Yet, when the other far doth roam,                                30
It leans, and hearkens after it,
    And grows erect, as that comes home.

Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
    Like th' other foot, obliquely run ;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,                                    35
    And makes me end where I begun.

Press pLAy : Arcade Fire

I'm at a crossroads with how to describe Arcade Fire's new album The Suburbs. The most accurate words that come to mind are "small town".

Picture this: sepia tones, greens and browns, a bunch of neighbourhood kids sitting on the pavement, bicycles scattered all around, an old radio playing, expressions of boredom and laziness on faces, an old vw bus passing by... in other words Arcade Fire's music brings up a warped vision of a 60s suburb living out a long hot summer. Bascially everything an Alternative Indie cd should make us envision.

The Suburbs is a really mellow album, with the best tracks being:
* Ready to Start
* Suburban War
* The Suburbs

You gonna love the mellow old school vibe of Arcade Fire.

When I first heard this song a few months ago, I was in a totally different place, surrounded by amazing people, and smack bang in the middle of a hot European Summer, but even now as a cold Winter crunches down, listening to this track takes me right back.

This dance track makes me smile pretty damn big every time I hear it!

Culture Class: Biting the Foreigner Bullet

When living overseas in a country where you don't speak the language and hardly know anyone, you are bound to end up having to bite the foreigner bullet every once in while and admit defeat.

Yeah that's right, its going to be hard to blend in and act natural when a map is your best friend and you do a little celebration dance everytime you hear any english. (True story, unfortunately)

These are some things you just have to get used to:

* Don't hate on the police, they are actually friendly people and are always helpful

*Your cellphone may be english, but that doesnt mean the cellphone companies send any english information messages...you won't ever know how to activate your airtime yourself or understand how many minutes you've used in the past month. Make friends with people in cellphone shops because you'll be visiting every month to top up.

*Locals can spot foreigners from a mile away. End of story.

*You will spend 70% of your time lost and slightly confused

*Converting currencies becomes a default reaction when shopping so brush up on your maths asap

Bottom line is you're in a foreign place for the adventure, so don't let the bullets knock you off your feet. Just go with it, keep smiling and by all means 'wave your flag' because the foreigner in all of us is the reason the locals can boast about their amazing sights and attractions, we just keep coming back for more.

Press pLAy : Christina Perri

I'm trying to think of adjectives to describe Christina Perri's single Jar of Hearts and so far I'm stuck on exceptional and profound!

It is one of the best songs I have heard in a long while and it had a huge impact on me. No jokes!

I'm an instant fan and I cannot wait for Christina Perri to release an album. Holding thumbs that it comes soon.

Favourite lines in the song:

"Who do you think you are,
running around leaving scars,
collecting your jar of hearts,
tearing love apart"

"You're gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul"

Amazing stuff! Don't miss out, Press pLAy immediately :)

Michael Grubbs is the lead singer. He is best known for his role as the talented bartender in One Tree Hill Season 7. His songs Dance So Good and Light Outside were featured in episodes. As much as some may hate on Taylor Swift, its impossible to hate on the fact that she knows how to write and sing songs that are big hits on the charts. This girl has got serious talent.

Speak Now is Taylor Swift's latest album release and even though I am not her biggest fan, I'd be lying if I didn't say that Speak Now is really really good.

Every track has its own charm, but my personal favourites are:
* Haunted
* Back To December
* The Story of Us

Press pLAy : The Script

The amazing Irish band The Script has pulled one out the bag again with their new album Science & Faith.
It's unbelievably good, especially judging that this album is following in the wake of their first self titled album which featured the hits Breakeven, The Man Who Can't Be Moved and Before the Worst!

The tracks which stand out for me on Science & Faith (2010) are:

* For The First Time
* Long Gone and Moved On
* Walk Away

Culture Class: The Worldly Versions of 'Cheers'

The act of drinking is universal and people drink for a large number of different reasons, but when it comes down to it, I think that we can agree that we all like to toast to good times, good health and lots of fun.

I once heard an interesting take on why people starting clinking glasses together when toasting and this is it: When we drink we can see the alcohol, smell the alcohol, and of course taste the alcohol, so that means 3 of our senses are incorporated in the act of drinking. So therefore, by clinking the glasses together, the act of drinking incorporates our last sense, which is of course hearing. With all the senses activated, there's a big chance the drink, whatever it may be, is going to be awesome.

Ever wondered what people around the world say when they toast?
Check these toasts out according to country:

* South Africa, Australia, America, Britain - CHEERS!
* Germany/Austria - PROST!
* Czech Republic - NAZTRAVI! (my personal favourite)
* Spain, Italy - SALUTE!
* Brazil - CHIN CHIN!
* Serbia - JI VE LI!
* Finland - KIPPIS!
* Russia - NA ZDVOVIA!
* Scotland - SLAINTE!
* Korea - KAMPAI!
* Portugal - SAUDE!
* Poland - NA ZDROWIE
* Denmark - SKAL!
* Romania - SANATATE!
* Estonia - TERVIST!
* China - GAN BEI!
* Japan - KANPAI!

By language:
* Swahili - AFYA!
* Hebrew - L'CHAIM!

Some of the spelling may be a bit off but the jist of the words are definitely above! If you have any to add to the list, by all means please do :)

That's What He Said: Nicholas Sparks

Ever heard of the author Nicholas Sparks?

Or maybe you know the movies The Notebook, Dear JohnA Walk to Remember, and The Last Song?

Nicholas Sparks is the author of all the books on which these movies are based on.

His novels as well as the movies are tear jerkers, but also exceptionally brilliant.

Nicholas Sparks has a unique view on what love means and he has a way with words that really makes one stop and think.

Here's some examples:

Press pLAy: The Middle

Looking for a new tv show to watch? Something funny, short and clever?
Well then you have got to try watch The Middle.

This half hour comedy show is currently in its second season and stars Patricia Heaton (known for her role in Everybody loves Raymond) and Neil Flynn (the janitor from Scrubs).

It's a show about family, and puts a funny spin on the trials and tribulations of raising kids.

The characters are spot on, the acting is realistic and the storyline is so honest and relatable, you can't help but laugh.

Put your feet up, relax on the couch and Press pLAy...The Middle will make your day :)

Press pLAy: Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon have released their new album Come Around Sundown and like the album cover art, the music takes you away to another place.

I can imagine listening to this music whilst on a roadtrip, with the windows rolled down and the ocean rolling along beside the car.

Most of the tracks have brilliant beginnings, especially The Immortals, and that is enough to take you through the whole song.

I'm not 100 % sold on the different kinds of sound but I am liking the general vibe of this new album and Kings of Leon never disappoint, so by all means Press pLAy and let the music take you away :)

Art Buzz: Lab Art 2010

Culture Class: Daylight Savings Time

In Europe, the 31st of October 2010, meant the end of Daylight Savings Time. This means that all clocks are set back by an hour. If you are not from Europe, the concept is rather confusing and can cause one to either run around an hour too early or an hour too late.

Winter is approaching and in Europe that means it gets darker earlier. The main purpose of Daylight Savings Time is, as its name explains, to maximise on the hours of light.

So on that note, be aware that the time has changed and make sure you are where you need to be at the right hour, and not lost on some non-existent time plain.

Press pLAy : Eliza Doolittle

It's 2010 and there is alot of hot music on the charts at the moment.

Eliza Doolittle's self titled 2010 album is a mix of old and new sounds. Her style is a combination of alternative and pop, and its definitely hot, catchy and something different.

Awesome tracks on the album include:
* Pack Up
* Moneybox
* Skinny Genes
